Paras’ 10 training : Week 9

Week 9, and I need to train around finishing off work before going to Turkey…

This week’s blog is brought to you by my friend, the tortoise, the only thing I seem capable of overtaking at the moment.

I overtook him not long after this. Honest.

Nothing happened.  It had been a long weekend.

Tuesday 29 April 2014

I had a meeting in London and there was a train strike, so I got to walk from St Pancras to Edgware Road.

I ran down to the Regiment Fitness session in St Albans with my bergen, but unfortunately Strava chose not to record the distance despite recording the time.  I have since discovered that my phone had changed its settings so that location services were not operating, so this was not a fault with Strava.  It was a nice evening and the session was being taken by Steve.  We began with a warm up in pairs which led into a run over to the drain and back before we moved on to a gate circuit, doing 40 repetitions of each exercise while our partner ran laps.  We did press ups, squat jumps, lunges, mountaineers, burpees (10) and sit ups.  Then we moved on to shuttles with tyre carries and jerry can pushes.  We finished off with boxing, doing a variety of punches – upward, straight, from a squat position, and hooks – before an excellent session was brought to an end with the warm down.  I ran back up the hill with my loaded bergen but Strava did not record it again.

I went across to Welwyn for the Regiment Fitness session, which was being taken by Tom.  As it has turned out, this was my final session with him at this location as he has moved on to Bedford.  Naturally, he is dead to me now.  Unlike yesterday evening, the weather was not playing nice and it was raining.  Really raining.  We got soaked.  We began with a warm up in pairs before taking a run to the far end and back.  The circuit involved running out to the far pole, doing 40 repetitons of each exercise and then running back, with us doing 10 exercises in total – press ups, squat jumps, sit ups, close hand press ups, lunges, mountaineers, leg raises, burpees, wide arm press ups, and our own choice to finish off (when I went for a mixture of sit ups and leg raises).  Then we split into pairs for log shoulder presses, doing 40, then 50, and finally 60 repetitions, with a run out to pole and back after each set.  We had a run to the far end and back before moving on with boxing in pairs, working for a minute with straight arm punching.  Then we got into two lines going along our lines doing 10 straight punches with each person in the line, racing against the other team.  We won one and lost one, so both teams got a forfeit, and we ended up doing some leopard crawling.  We had a warm down and I went home to get dry and warmed up !

  1. Regiment Fitness – 1 hour

Friday 02 May 2014

I was working from home and then travelling to Turkey for a few days’ holiday.

Saturday 03 May 2014

Our hotel in Turkey had a gym so as we had some time available we went to use it.  I warmed up on the stepping machine for 5 minutes before using the multi-weight machine, doing 3 x 15 repetitions of each exercise, which were shoulder press, bicep curl, incline press, triceps pushdown, chest press, lat pulldown, leg extension, and leg curl.  I followed that with a 20 minute swim and then went into the steam room, which all made a nice change.

This was not actually on the holiday wishlist...

  2. Swim – 20 minutes

The weather was not good enough for our planned boat trip, so it was back to the hotel gym to use up some time.  I decided to do a tabata, doing 3 sets of 20 seconds of each exercise with 10 seconds inbetween, doing bicep curls with dumbbells, tricep dips, lunge jumps, press ups, shoulder presses with dumbbells, mountaineers, squats, and Turkish get ups.  I was soaking with sweat by the end of it.  In the afternoon I decided to go for a run, and stayed out for 1 hour 09 minutes, covering at least 4.5 miles.  My time away from the hotel also included scrambling on the side of the mountain, which is when I met my friend, the tortoise.

  1. Gym – tabata
  2. Run (Turkey) – 4.5 miles – 1 hour 09 minutes

Positives from this week – I managed to keep things going despite the demands of work and setting off on holiday.
